NYOB ZOO and WELCOME TO MURRAY JR. HIGH'S ELL DEPARTMENT

Winter greetings from Murray’s English Language Learners!

Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab 2009!

ELL classes are in the middle of their Sonoran Desert research project.   Each student has chosen a desert creature to research and is writing an essay filled with the results of their research.  The essays teach the reader about the particular animal’s physical description, habitat, foods, adaptations and other surprises!  In addition, students were required to cite the sources they used and illustrate the topics they researched.

Murray’s ELL students just finished reading Queen of Death. It is an ancient mystery set in modern-day Egypt (think INDIANA JONES!).
HMONG FAMILY - Hmong Family Potluck Dinner 2003
The Annual Hmong Family Potluck Dinner.
While reading this novel, students became archeologists and studied the geography, writing, burial customs, and much more about Ancient Egypt. Next they will read the classic novel Oliver Twist and learn about an orphan boy who struggles in the harsh streets of London’s criminal world in the 19th century.  Students are sure to sympathize with the difficult life and decisions that Oliver encounters.

Murray’s Hmong Parent Organization has  Parent Meetings in February and March.  And, of course, don’t miss our annual, year-end HMONG FAMILY POTLUCK DINNER in May!  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chi Yang, Karen Brumbaugh or Ann Hebble at  651-293-8740.

Our Mission and Goals:

The ELL teachers, counselors, and staff work together to help students whose home language is not English.  Students are rigorously pushed to strengthen their ability to use the English language in their academic coursework.

We offer ELL students an opportunity to learn at different language proficiency levels in order to meet the students' individual needs. Our theme this school year is "It's For the Birds!" We will use the ornithology as our guide to learning English!

Our Bilingual Educational Assistant, Chi Yang, works closely with the students, ELL teachers and the mainstream teachers to ensure that the students stay on track and pass the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments for graduation. She is the integral link between Murray staff and Murray's Hmong families.  Ms. Yang contacts parents regarding their students' grades, test scores, and attendance.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact the Murray's ELL Department at 651-293-8740 Ext. 1212 or check our school website at http://murray.spps.org/hmong
