Magnet Science II
Supplies needed for class:
  • Notebook dedicated for science (I will collect them at times through out the year)
  • Folder for handouts
  • Pen or Pencil
For the rest of the year we will be using our knowledge of chemistry from the second trimester to understand the basis of life on earth.  We will continue with the study of cellular processes, genetics, classification of living things and a survey of these life forms and how they interact in their environments.  This involves lab work with microscopes, dissection equipment and other lab based experiences and field work that allow students to better understand life on earth.

ESSAY QUESTION: What is the definition of life and how have scientists developed this with experimental evidence?

          Criteria List:
10 pt.  Explain the 6 characteristics all living things share.
10 pt.  Describe Redi's and Pasteur's experimental design.
10 pt. Describe discovery of cells and cell theory (include names).
5 pt. How are all of these experiments/observations important in
            understanding the characteristics of life.
5 pt. Organization (introduction, supporting and concluding paragraphs).

          Extra Credit:
                   viruses
                   needs of living things
                   microscopes

Class web assignments can be completed by using these web links below.

 Virtual Cell Tour
Microscopic Measurement   How big is that object in the microscope? In this module you will learn how to calibrate your microscope, and use that calibration to estimate the size of objects in your field of view.
NOVA Science Now - Artificial Life   Are scientists on the verge of making living things from little more than dust?
Cellular Visions: The Inner Life of a Cell   What can character animators learn from those who render microscopic worlds in 3D? Plenty. This animation illustrates unseen molecular mechanisms and the ones they trigger, specifically how white blood cells sense and respond to their surroundings and external stimuli.
