How Can I Help My Child?

Here are some basics of how to help your child.

Make a homework routine.  With rare exceptions, students will have homework every single night.
Pre-Algebra assignments are checked every day.  Work that is turned in late in the same week is given half credit, and work that is turned in after Monday of the following week is not accepted for credit.
Algebra assignments are only collected once per week; however, students who do it all on Sunday nights will find themselves confused in class and performing poorly on quizzes.
Students should have a regular time and place in which homework is done every night.

Monitor homework completion.  Students are given a calendar every Monday (also available on this website) that shows their assignments for the whole week.  Compare the calendars to your child’s work to ensure that everything is complete.

Monitor your child's grade.  My grade book is available online on the Parent Portal at https://ereport.spps.org/campus/portal/stpaul.jsp or click on "Parent Resources" on the left side of the Murray webpage.  If you find your child's grade to be lower than you both would like, please click on one of the links to "How can I help my struggling student?" documents at the bottom of this page.

Encourage your child to ask questions and seek help.  I will be available after school each Wednesday to help with homework or give make-up quizzes or tests.  If that is not convenient, please contact me and we can arrange another time before or after school.

Read the book.  When your child needs help with homework, start by reading through the examples at the beginning of the lesson.

Look online at http://my.hrw.com/.  Log in using "palgmurray" as username and password for Pre-Algebra or “algmurray” as username and password for Algebra.  In addition to finding the entire textbook online, you will find lesson tutorial videos and practice problems.
